What is the Emotional Intelligence (EQ) assessment?
Emotional Intelligence is quickly becoming recognized as one of the most important factors in overall success in the world of work. Distinct from intellectual ability, emotional intelligence or EQ describes a person’s social and emotional functioning and has profound implications for productivity, cooperation, and leadership. EQ assessment measures and describes various areas of emotional and social skill, points towards key strengths and weaknesses, and provides a map for effective development.
What does the Emotional Intelligence assessment measure?
The Emotional Intelligence (EQ) assessment measures five key aspects of social and emotional functioning:
- Self-awareness: How well do you tune in to your own emotions?
- Other awareness: How well do you observe emotions in others?
- Empathy: How well do you connect to others who are having emotional experiences?
- Emotional control: How well are you able to manage emotions in your everyday life?
- Well-being: How well do you harness positive forces like optimism, enthusiasm, and motivation?
The assessment returns scores in each of the five aspects of EQ to reveal both strengths and growth areas.

Is the Emotional Intelligence (EQ) assessment valid and reliable?
EQ has been a popular topic for nearly 40 years and has been linked to many aspects of personal and professional success. Trusted by Fortune 500 companies and millions of individuals worldwide, Truity’s EQ assessment is designed to meet the rigorous standards expected for coaching, leadership development, and workplace training.
Truity’s Emotional Intelligence (EQ) assessment uses an original test design which was statistically validated with a global sample of more than 36,000 test users. After a review of the established literature, we composed a set of proprietary scales to measure emotional intelligence across five dimensions: Self-awareness, Other Awareness, Emotional Control, Empathy, and Wellbeing. Analysis of sample test data showed strong evidence of both reliability and validity across all five factors. Multiple statistical methods demonstrated that the five factors were both valid (i.e. measuring something real) and distinct, indicating that each factor is a significant and unique aspect of social and emotional function.
Additionally, our research explored connections between demographics and EQ. We found that as test-takers got older, their EQ generally increased, showing a predictable increase in socioemotional skills with age and experience. Analyses of EQ and gender revealed that men generally score higher on Emotional Control, while women score higher on Empathy and Other Awareness. These trends align with established research on gender differences in emotion and perception and highlight the validity of the Truity EQ model.
In a workplace-focused study, we analyzed EQ scores and management responsibilities. Individuals in management roles scored significantly higher across all five dimensions of emotional intelligence than non-managers. In addition, EQ scores increased as a manager’s number of employees increased. These patterns indicate meaningful correlations between EQ scores and workplace dynamics.
